illegal function opening mail

I'm getting an 'illegal function' when opening or sending mail in Outlook 2000. It's W98 2nd edition. I've tried repairing Outlook, uninstalling and reinstalling Office, updating Liveupdate (which was already fairly current) scanned the drive for viruses. Every instance I see in here having to do with "illegal function" has no answer to it. Help me somebody before I have to format and reinstall
