Image problems in PowerPoint 2002

My presentation looked great. I saved it and the next time
I opened it several of the images appeared as a white box
with a red "x".

1. Can I get my original pics back without trying to
figure out what I was using and where it was?

2. Why is this happening?

3. How can I prevent it from happening?
