Images with alpha not loading

Inspite of repeated efforts iam unable to import images
with alpha in powerpoint, be it .png , or .tif or even.
jpeg. all images come complete but no alpha. Please
suggect a resolution cause i need this very urgently. I
have Powerpoint 97.
