Images do not show up when I open a mail message, just the red x's.

Is it a preference I need to change> I can't find it anywhere.

There's no preference to change...yet. By design, Entourage never downloads
images in an email. This is done to prevent what often essentially is a
confirmation to the sender of that email that it was received -- thus
validating your email address to the spammer (if such mail is spam). The
result? You'll likely get even more spam.

To get images, you must click the "Download images" link at the top of each
email message that contains red Xs. A slight annoyance, but most on this
board agree that doing it this way gives YOU control over which email
senders you confirm information to.

The bottom line? If you recognize the email as valid (i.e., not spam), then
click the link and download the images. If not, then simply delete the
message and you won't be risking a confirmation you don't want to give.

This is a hotly debated topic among Entourage users, so it's (our) hunch
that a future version of Outlook might give users the ability to
automatically download these images as part of the Preferences.

I, for one, won't be doing that. I like it just the way it is.

Actually, there's a bit of confusion (fostered by some simple-mindedness on
the part of Microsoft) over the terms 'pictures' and 'images' here.

'images' - in the sense of graphics files attached to messages or inserted
(pasted) into HTML messages you create in Entourage or similar email clients
- always download with the email unless you block them by rules or account
options you've specified that partially download. They don't cause any
problem whatsoever.

The type of "pictures" that have to be downloaded are not attachments or
insertions: they are URL links to webpages on websites which are downloaded
and displayed by the Complex HTML renderer in the same way as safari and
other browsers do. They cannot be sent by Entourage but can by some other
email clients that compose in what Entourage calls "complex HTML". (Outlook
Windows, Netscape and some others can send these.) The website references
can include "snoops" that confirm your email address to the senders and make
your address more valuable to sell to spam merchants. It can't do much other
damage at the moment when received in Entourage, but theoretically could be
the avenue for some future worm or virus that might be developed. So you are
protected by this provision . If you don't care and want to take the risk,
you can add senders to your Address Book and check the Preference to
download pictures from contacts in your Address Book.

PMFJI...but I am having the same problem with the red "x's" but I can't
locate the "Download Images" link at the top of the email. What am I
missing?

There should be a "Download Pictures" button that appears in a light-yellow
colored info bar with an international no sign. If you click it, are
connected to the internet, and not working offline (select Entourage > Work
Online), the images should appear. There are some cases in which the button
does not appear (such as after you mark a message as "Not Junk"), and in
such cases usually quitting and re-launching Entourage will fix the problem.

Here's an image of the button that I'm referring to. It's in the lower
right-hand corner.

You can add the domains (after the @ sign) of your newsletters to the Safe
Domains list in the Junk E-mail Protection dialog (Tools > Junk E-mail
Protection) to make sure that the images display automatically.

Also, make sure these preferences (Entourage > Preferences) are checked:
General Preferences > Security > Display complex HTML in messages
Mail & News Preferences > View > Show attached pictures & movies

OS 10.3.9
Entourage X
I send e-mails, with pictures or cartoons, to a friend, with a PC, who
will forward them using a group.
My address is in that group so I get my original e-mail sent back to me
from her when she does her forwarding.
The cartoons and/or pictures are red x's after she forwards my original
e-mail back to me.
But, almost every e-mail she sends with an attachment contain red x's
instead of an image.
But they were perfect when I sent them and she received them.
I've never noticed any "Download Pictures" button.

Have you made sure that the "show attached pictures and movies in messages"
preference is activated in the View section of the Mail & News Preferences?
Also, do the pictures show up as attachments, i.e. can you download them to
your desktop for instance and view them from there? It would also be
interesting to get these e-mails through another e-mail client (such as
Apple's Mail, which comes with Mac OS X) to see if the attachments can be
viewed from there.
It would also be worth finding out how exactly your friend proceeds once
s/he's got your e-mails. Does s/he just forward them to a group, or could it
be that your address is in the CC: or BCC: field?
By the way, it is normal that you don't see the "Download Pictures" button
as this feature was introduced in Entourage 2004 only.

The "Download Pictures" link does NOT apply to that type of picture -
graphics that you include as either attachments or insertions in a message.
they are strictly for linked images on web pages.

As Michel says, it sounds as if you don't have the "Show attached pictures
and movies in messages" preference checked in Preferences/View. However, it
might be some sort of issue with "round-tripping" insertions or attachments
in your friend's email program. It may be that she needs to save your
attachments to disk before re-inserting or attaching them in her message,
rather than forwarding your message. (Nothing to do with your Entourage.)

Michel and Paul

Thanks for pointing out that Download Pictures does not apply to
Entourage X and these kind of pictures.
The Show attached pictures etc, is checked, so the solution must be in
what the friend does with the e-mails and attachments prior to or
during her forwarding process.
She does have a group that she forwards these e-mails to and, after
checking with a couple of them, it is apparent that they have problems
viewing the attachments or insertions in her e-mails also.
So, you are right, my Entourage X can't be held responsible for not
displaying these attachments or insertions.
Thanks for your input.
