IMAP calendar syncing interesting issue

My public folder IMAP calendar syncs great if I click on the actual folder
but not unless I do. To solve the problem, I tried setting up a rule that
changed the status of new items from unread to read, thinking that this
would cause Entourage to sync locally. It did not work. Any ideas so I won't
need to go to the folder every time I want to sync? Am I overlooking
something that should be rather obvious?

BTW, I have enabled the "check for unread messages in all folders" option.
