IMAP Messages Lost in Entourage

A

Aslam Nathoo

Is anyone else having this issue?

I use IMAP and I have been having a lot of problems with messages being lost
from my message list. They are still on the server and I can get them back
in Entourage again by doing a Repair Message List but on a folder that has
2700 messages, that repair takes a few minutes. And this is happening to me
at least a couple of times per day more recently more often then that. It
always seems to happen when I have just deleted a few messages and I start
reading another message as the delete is running in the background. The new
message I am reading suddenly disappears. My settings have it set so that
messages are moved to the deleted items folder and commands are being sent
simultaneously. I am running the latest updated version of Entourage 2004
and 10.4.8 fully updated on an iBook G4 with 1.12 gigs of RAM. Since the
message is still on the server and recoverable with a repair message list,
the problem must originate with Entourage.

My questions are as follows:
1. Is anyone else experiencing this?
2. What gives? How do I stop this from happening?
3. Is this a known issue?
4. If not, how do I get it reported to the Entourage Product Group so that
they can fix this behaviour in the next version? Anyone know whom I can
e-mail in that group about this?

Thanks,
Aslam

P.S. Why are there two newsgroups for this product? Which one should I be
posting to in the future?

I've not seen this on my machine. Usually a simple Command-L (refresh
message list) takes care of any issues.
2. What gives? How do I stop this from happening?

If you go to Entourage > About Entourage, it should say "Version 11.2.5
(060620)". If it says an earlier version, your copy isn't fully up-to-date.
Download and install the latest Office 2004 update, which is the Office 2004
11.3.0 update.

In Office 2004, use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get the latest updates. From
any Office application, go to Help > Check for Updates (or manually launch
Microsoft AutoUpdate from the Applications folder). If any updates are
needed, they will display in a sheet, at which point you can check them and
press the "Install" button to download and install them.

Updates can also be found at the Microsoft web site:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#Office2004>

If that doesn't help, try finding out what kind of IMAP server you are
connecting to and post back. This will often work:
1. Go to Tools > Accounts, and open your IMAP account.
2. Copy down the name of your IMAP server.
3. click the "Advanced Receiving Options" button and write down the port #.
4. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
5. Type in
telnet your.imap.server 143
(Replace your.imap.server with the IMAP server in your account settings, and
143 with a different port number if necessary.)
6. Depending on what kind of IMAP srrver you're connected to, it may
display the IMAP server software & version.

If that doesn't work, ask your system administrator for that information.

It might also help to Control-click the IMAP account icon in the Folder
List, Control-click it, select "Get Info" from the contextual menu, and copy
down the capabilities of your IMAP server, and post back with that
information.
3. Is this a known issue?
4. If not, how do I get it reported to the Entourage Product Group so that

The correct newsgroup is <microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage>. A while
back, the other group was the official newsgroup for Entourage, but most
people have moved to the new group.

Did that and you were right I wasn't fully updated. I am up to 060620 now

older group. Why keep it active?

and they can't figure out what's wrong at their end as I've been using the
same IMAP server of theirs for some time now. The problem on started

Just happened to me again. It seems to happen when I delete many messages in
short succession.

For example, I was going through and deleting all the spam that I daily
get. I hit delete (keyboard not the icon) on message and it went away from
my inbox, the nest message was there and became highlighted and displayed in
the reading pane. I then saw the progress item start its process in the
background. As that progress item was running (had not completed yet) I hit
delete on another message (the one that was now in the reading pane). That
message went away from my inbox and the third message was now highlighted
and shown in the reading pane. Almost immediately, that third message
disappeared from the inbox. I can check the server and its not gone from
there. I can get it back in Entourage by doing a repair but it's a pain to
do because I have 2700 messages in that mailbox and so repair takes 10
minutes.

Microsoft or someone, please help?!
