IMAP Question, Entourage Mac X

John B. Williams

Am considering switching from POP to IMAP account, and have set up a
test account to see how it works. It's different, that's for sure, but
seems to work well. However, I think I'm missing something.

Normally, in Entourage, when I reply to a message, Entourage remembers
this and in the mail panel, it gives me a link saying "show reply". In
the IMAP account, if I send a message to someone, and I use as the
return address an IMAP account, I do not get a linked account (no link
saying "show reply). However, if I send an email to any address, but I
use my return address as a POP account, then I get the link (show
reply).

Is that weird or what? I am new to IMAP, think it solves a lot of
problems, but it seems like this basic linking should work. Is there
something I didn't turn on somewhere? Because when I couldn't get the
"sent date" to show up, I saw a posting here that said I needed to
turn this on in the View/Columns. That makes sense, OK, problem
solved.

Any ideas or resources to look at?

Thank you!

John

it depends on the type of IMAP server. Cheapo IMAP servers like mac.com's
are "non-UID Plus" and can't track the replied-to messages on the server.
Classier IMAP servers are UID Plus and can do all of that. POP accounts just
need to look in your local folders in your local database, and so have no
problem.

If you control-click on your IMAP account icon in the Folder List, and
select "Get Info", you'll see whether or not it includes "UID Plus". In your
case it won't, I'm afraid.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for letting me know. I'm with hostdepartment.com so I will ask
them if I can upgrade or not. I get the following message when I
control-click:

IMAP4rve1
Children Namespace
Thread=Ordersobject
Thead=References sort

So, I don't see UID Plus. Oh well, you get what you pay for.

Thanks again,

John

One more question if you would, Paul. I have asked my server guys
about UID Plus and the guy I talked to didn't know, so he's bumping it
up to admin level. However, do you know of good source on the web
which explains what this is and where I can get a hosting company who
offers it? I don't mind paying for it if it will help me to keep
track of mails (we send about 16,000 per year, so it's important for
our biz).

Thanks again for your help.

John
