IMAP & Root Certificates

An IMAP server that I was reading without issue in Entourage v.X won't
read in Entourage 2004 without a root certificate.

I got the root certificate and tried both DER and PEM formats, neither
work.

The certificate shows up as valid in Keychain Access and in Microsoft
Cert Manager. It was installed as Entourage said to: an X509 Anchor.

Any ideas?

What error message is Entourage giving you? Are you able to access the
same IMAP server using Mail.app and SSL?

"Unable to establish a secure connection to x.y.z because the correct
root certificate is not installed. If you continue, the information you
view and send will not be secure."

Curiously, if I continue I get this error:
"Mailbox vulnerability - directory /var/mail must have 1777 protection"
I still cannot read my inbox.

More curiously: I can access other folders on the IMAp server, but not
my inbox. The server's administrator replaced me on a job I left in 00,
so I know him. He checked his server for setup glitches and also
checked the permissions on the server. The above error message is
nonsensical to reality.

I can access the IMAP server via SSL using Entourage v.X and Mail.app.
