IMAP vs Exchange

Hi, I¹m wondering if someone can tell me the difference between using IMAP
and Exchange for connecting to an Exchange server?
Is there an advantage/disadvantage to either method?

Thanks,
Scott

With Entourage you are always using IMAP. The exchange update just makes
synching your calendar(via webdav) and ldap lookups somewhat easier and
configuring it with one dialog instead of 3. I am hoping someday MS puts
MAPI or atleast RPC over HTTPS into Entourage so its more like Outlook
2001 which is way more like the PC version.

I would doubt you would ever see MAPI support in Entourage. Didn't
someone say that Microsoft is moving from MAPI to WebDAV as the
interface for Exchange even with Outlook on Windows?

One problem with Entourage against Outlook for Windows is that the user
interface for Entourage was not designed for Exchange access. There is
so much Exchange functionality that is just missing, like server mail
rules and multiple address book, access to other users folders. I hope
Entourage evolves to include this functionality.

1. You need Exchange 2000 or 2003 to connect as Exchange. In spite of what
someone else wrote incorrectly, this connects you via WebDAV, same as OWA
does. You get to have your Address Books and Calendar on the server. You can
delegate (or be delegate for) others. (You have to set it up in Outlook but
it works in Entourage.) A big update for Exchange has been announced for
later in the year, which will make Entourage more versatile, perhaps on a
par with Outlook as an Exchange client (share calendars and address books,
public folder support, etc.). It will work only as an Exchange account.
2. The only "advantage" of setting it up as IMAP is that it will work with
Exchange 5.5 servers. In Entourage 2004, you'll only be able to use it for
mail, nothing else.

Thanks, Paul. That helps.
We¹re having about 75% good luck here on our new Active Directory / Exchange
2003 setup. We just can¹t get the GAL working with LDAP it must be a
setup issue on the server, or we¹re not getting the correct info for LDAP.
Being a PC shop mainly, it¹s tough to get Mac help on the back-end...

If anyone has any experience with this side of Entourage, I¹d love to hear
about it.

Best, and thanks,
Scott

Actually, there is another advantage to setting up the account as IMAP,
rather than Exchange. You get messages a heck of a lot faster. There
is a very annoying lag when it is an Exchange account, anywhere from 30
seconds to several minutes. IMAP actually activesyncs. You get
messages about as fast as a PC using Outlook. Using Exchange, you get
a big delay.

Couple problems with Exchange: You don't have calendar or contact
syncing (unless someone knows how to do that). Also, I had some
problems with IMAP duplicating messages.

Sorry meant "couple problems with IMAP." If you set up as IMAP, it
won't sync calendar or contact.

I stopped using POP3 and moved to IMAP after 3 years of using POP3.
I kept all my e-mails on the server (12 000 mails) and decided to organise
them via IMAP in folders by Rules in Entourage 2004.
(reason -> pop3 became too slow and I my mails on my mailclient were not
synchronised with the state on the mailserver.)

Things went wrong when I applied the rules:
1. Messages were duplicated in Entourage and on the mailserver.
2. Messeges became "unremovable" in Entourage, but they were removed
correctly on the server.
3. Sending a copy of a reply does not work when restarting Entourage.

Likely this is a known problem? Does anyone knows a fix, workaround, ... ?

Thx,

Jan
