Paul thank for the reply. I tried all these earlier. The problem is more subtle, I tried everything that a fairly experienced, but not expert user can try. I played a lot with the athentication. And Mac's Mail program works perfectly with password authentication but no SSL. Entourage does not work with this same setup, and it does not work with any possible setup I could come up with, I tried a lot. The main point is that original Mail program works, and Entourage with the same setup does not. No typos, it's really the same setup. Mail seems to know something that Entourage does not. The mail server is actually at my University, and I'm trying to do this from home. It might be some firewall issue, I suspect that from the University's local network Entourage would work (I haven't had a chance to try), but I need it from home.

I have absolutely no problem setting up my IMAP server in Mail, it works
perfectly there, sending email needs password authentication.
When I apply the same setting in Entourage and I try to send an email, I get
the message that the IMAP server does not recognize any of the authentication
methods of Entourage.
Any suggestions?
1. Depending on the ISP and account, the "sending" server (SMTP) address may
be different from the receiving (IMAP) server address. Are you certain you
don't need to enter a different sending address?
2. Experiment with authentication. In the Account dialog, click the long
button at the bottom "Advanced sending options". Check the "Authentication
required" box, and "Same as sending" box. Now try. If that's how it was
already set up when you went there, try turning authentication Off, then try
sending again.
3. You may possibly have an ISP that requires you to receive (check mail)
before you can send. Go to Tools/Schedules/Send & Receive All, and move the
Actions around such that all your Receive Mail actions are above the Send
All action. Set the schedule to run At Startup. If this helps, then make
sure that any time you want to send a message you have previously checked
for mail within the previous 20-30 minutes. To be sure, run Send & Receive
All before sending a new message.
