Import from .pst Problem

I had to reformat and I saved my inbox, outbox and contacts in Personal File Format .pst.
I can restore both inbox and outbox but I cannot restore my contacts.

I also exported my contacts in an excel format but the restore with mapped fields is incredible and gives me a real mess.

Could you provide more detail? How did you save your Contacts and why can't
you restore them? What happens when you try?
Why did you not simply save and reuse the entire PST file?
