Import of data causes problems with query

Hi! I'm trying to import a xls file. I have no errors
with bring it into Access.. When I go to create a
duplicate query against this table a field does not
appear. I went into the table and found that when I
import the file it converts this missing field to a memo
field because its longer than 255. So I guess you can
not query on a memo field. When I changed it to a text
field it cuts text out of the field... I really need to
do a duplicate query against this table with all the text
in the fields. Is there another way that I can do this
with the memo field existing? I know that you can not
exceed 255 in the text field.
