Importing local folders to Entourage

Gary

I have a user that previously used Outlook 2001 for the
Mac and had some local (personal folders)on an older
computer. How do I copy these folders into Entourage v.X
on the new computer? I have tried exporting and importing
with no success. The user's new computer is a Mac G5
running OS X.2 Any suggestions?

Entourage X has to import messages from older versions. Are the messages in
an identity folder or are they MBOX files? You need to give more info.

Also there is no Outlook 2001 for the Mac.

Oh yes there is. That's the current version (OS 9 or Classic). It doesn't
have MBOXes. Check MacTopia for details.

If you have Outlook 2001, you must have Exchange. Bring the personal folders
(pst) back up onto the server as mail Folders. With Entourage 10.1.4 or
10.1.5, you can simply access the same mail folders from the same Exchange
account set up in Tools/Accounts. If you have an earlier version of
Entourage X, update Office v. X to v10.1.2 then 10.1.4 (and then 10.1.5)
with the office X updaters at MacTopia.

Even in older versions you could set up an IMAP account this way, with the
Exchange account set to access IMAP. (You still need to have the Exchange
account set up that way by IT.) But you're much better off now with an
Exchange account in Entourage.

If you've quit wherever it was you used to have access to Exchange, you're
out of luck. Find a friend with Outlook Windows (or Mac), open the .pst
there in a new profile, and follow the instructions in the ReadMe (Outlook
section a third of the way through) in my "Export-Import Entourage X"
scripts from

MacScripter.net <http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/>

for getting the mail over to Entourage. If at all possible, use the IMAP
method. If not, use the more tedious Eudora method. Or get one of the other
devices for getting mail from Outlook to Entourage. Fortunately, your
Outlook 2001 pst files will simply open OK in Outlook Windows, and you can
take it from there.

I have a similar issue for which I have been unable to
find an acceptable solution. I have been running Outlook
for the Mac (which says it is 2001 in the about window, by
the way) on OS X v10.2 for quite some time. It is very
important in my work to both keep my network server usage
low and keep copies of all e-mail transactions for future
reference. To that end I created a system of rules that
shuffle all incoming messages to local, personal folders.
The PC equivalent is a .pst file, I believe. As each
personal folder approaches 650 MB or so, I create a new
folder for incoming mail.

With this system I can burn old mail on CD's for
archiving, readily access an old personal folder without
having to keep it opened all the time, commonly deal with
only the latest messages, and keep my traffic off the main
mail server. Problem: I cannot migrate this system to
Entourage.

I have been desperately waiting for an OS X native version
of Outlook to finally shed my reliance on Classic
Emulation. I was thrilled to see that Entourage had added
Exchange support and opened that window. My hopes were
dashed when I found no support for Personal Folders in
Entourage.

I need the ability to be able to add and remove these old
folders when they are required and no longer required. Am
I missing something? Can this be done in Entourage? I
would intensely like to simply access the existing files.
Entourage's help files suggest the only way to transfer
these messages is to migrate them to the server, then
migrate them to an Entourage folder. This falls short in
two ways: too much data to transfer, and no ability to
mount and unmount the old messages.

As well as I can tell, the messages would then have to be
stored in my OS X user folder, rather than another hard
drive as they are now. I have grave doubts that my server
administrators will go along with transferring 7 CD's of
archived data through the mail server. Especially when
they find out that I am transferring it from my local
drive back to my local drive. Am I the only one that
thinks this sounds silly?

Can anyone help? Am I now stuck with emulated Outlook to
be able to archive old messages? Am I the only one that
keeps this stuff? Am I missing something obvious?

Sincerely,

TJ
