Importing Mac emails to PC

O

Oliver

If someone using a Mac and entourage X sends me a CD with emails, can
I in any way convert them or open them with my PC and Outlook express
6 or any other application run on a PC?

I'd appreciate any advise that any of you might be able to give?

Many Thanks
Oliver

How are the emails stored? Separately (".eml" files)? In this case, I think
you can drag them to the Outlook Express window, they'd open.

If it's a ".mbox" archive, I'm afraid you won't be able to open it. Well if
you like archeology, you can browse through it with "NotePad", but it's not
very convenient...

If they're .mbox files, you can change the extension to .mbx and drag them
to the location for Eudora mailbox files. You will then see them in Eudora,
and can import them from there into OE if you wish.

This is a good idea. I got myself Eudora and saved the .mbox file in
the appropriate folder as .mbx. However, although it is stored in the
right place, it does not appear in eudora as a mailbox.
I appreciate this is not really a subject for this newsgroup but if
you can give any more advice that would be great.

Thanks for your help.

You probably have the wrong location for Eudora mailboxes.

Get my script package "Export-Import Entourage X" from

MacScripter.net <http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/>

Read the Outlook section: Messages. It has the detailed steps. You don't
need to buy the scripts for this, just follow the directions.

For Eudora to recognise them they need to be of file type "TEXT" - get a
file type changing utility to reset them, or open the MBOX in BBEDIT and
resave it as a text file (without editing in any other way).

Barry, the subject is "Importing Mac emails to PC". I was referring to
Eudora Windows, not Eudora Mac. You are referring to Eudora Mac here. Eudora
Windows does not care about Mac file types, and requires an extension of
".mbx". All it needs after that is to find the location for mailbox files
(where you will find "Inbox.mbx" and a few other default mailboxes.) Oliver
must not have found the correct location. I directed him to the ReadMe in my
Export-Import Entourage X scripts. To spell it out, here's what to do:

€ In Windows, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel. Double-click Folder
Options folder or select Tools menu/Folder Options. Click View tab. Click to
turn on "Show hidden files and folders", under "Hidden Files and folders" if
it is not already selected (black dot). Click Apply, then OK. Close Control
Panel.

€ Go to C:\Documents and Settings\[your UserName]\Application
Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\ . (If you prefer just double-click the Eudora shortcut
folder in C:\Documents and Settings\[your UserName]\ and you get to the same
place.) Drag in all the .mbx files, which should now appear with the Eudora
mailbox icon. Do not drag in the folder in which they came - drag them in
loose into the Eudora folder.

€ Open Eudora (the program) in Start/Program Files. Do not make Eudora your
default email client if asked. Double-click on each and every imported
mailbox until you see the messages appear - important. This gets Eudora to
make its .TOC (table of contents) file for each mailbox, and is essential.
Then quit Eudora if you wish.

[Optional - to continue on to Outlook Express Windows and/or Outlook:]

€ Open Outlook Express (Start/Programs/Outlook Express). Go to
File/Import/MessagesŠ Select "Eudora Pro or Light (through v3.0)". Click
Next. Click Browse button. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[your
UserName]\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\ . Click OK. Outlook Express will
import all the mailboxes from Eudora into its Local Folders main folder.
Quit Outloo Express.

€ Open Outlook, go to File / Import and Export / Import Internet Mail and
Addresses / Outlook Express 4.x/5. Check Import Mail. Uncheck Import Address
Book and Rules.. Finish. All the message folders will appear in Outlook's
folder bar as a subfolder of Outlook Today, merging with exiting folders of
the same name.
