Hi Atul,
I am not familiar with any workplan templates in Excel. If you have not
created the Excel file yet, why not just start by entering the data into
Project directly instead of entering in Excel and then importing?
Usually what I do if I have a plan from someone that was started in
Excel is:
1) Review the Excel file to determine what information has been entered.
Usually it is Task Name information, Work, or Duration, dates, and
occasionally resource information. You will need to know whether the
Excel data is task data, resource data, or assignment data.
2) Launch MS Project and open the Excel file. The Import Wizard will
start. You will then need to map the columns of data from Excel into
the appropriate fields in Project. For example: Task information from
Excel mapped to the [Name] field in project.
A word of caution about importing dates into the [Start] and [Finish]
fields. I would import estimates start and finish dates from an Excel
file into other date fields not directly into the Start and Finish
fields in Project. Once you get the data into Project, use the Project
Start date, calendar settings, durations and dependencies (predecessors
& successors) to have Project calculate the Start and Finish fields.
I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
