In Box has emptied without warning

When I switched on today I found my In box had lost all the mail there. No warning! The mail in my folders was still there, and the Sent mail was complete. Just no messages from the past. Is there any way to recover these items - some of considerable importance.

Make sure you have not inadvertently enabled a filter. When in your inbox,
go to the View menu and see if there is a tick next to "Unread Only" or
"Flagged Only". If there is, select these entries once again to disable
them.
