In PowerPoint the slide repaints endlessly when editing

When editing presentations using PowerPoint some slides go into a repaint
that seems endless and they only way to resolve this is to zoom to a low
percent like 33%.

Try changing hardware acceleration.

I've also had this happen when running odd programs in the background --
like SETI distributed computing, stuff like that.
