indexing

I am new to word and would like to know how to create a fairly simple index
for a series of recipies.
I would like the index to have a format like:

BEEF
Casserole..............41
Olives.....................25
Roast....................53
Tea........................18

CHICKEN
Broth.....................19
Risotto...................33
Sandwiches............30

FISH
Broiled....................15
Fried.......................81
Pie...........................22

etc

I have Word Pro for XP. I can see how to get a simple alphabetic index by
marking the text but is it possible to have index entries sorted
aphabetically under main headings?

Hi, Chris,

You need to enter the index entries so that the category is the "main
entry" and the recipe is a "subentry". They're separated with a colon.

For example, the first batch would be created by marking entries with

BEEF:Casserole
BEEF:Olives
BEEF:Roast
BEEF:Tea

The next batch would be marked with

CHICKEN:Broth

and so on.

Thanks for that - I have manually inserted the BEEF: etc in the index field
once the index text has been marked. I this the way to do it ? I cant seem
to put beef in the main entry and casserole in the subindex entry in the
index panel that comes up after alt-shift-x.

If you select "Casserole" and press Alt+Shift+X, then yes, "Casserole" is
going to be the main entry, and you'll have to retype the main entry and
subentry. Once you get the hang of it, you may find it easier to enter the
XE fields manually. For example, type

XE "BEEF:Casserole"

Select the text and press Ctrl+F9. This converts it to a field. (You can
also press Ctrl+F9 first and type the text between the braces.)

Select that field and copy it. Paste it where you have another BEEF entry
and edit it to be, say "BEEF:Olives." This can be a lot quicker than using
the Mark Index Entry dialog.
