info on add-ins

hi all,
can we open any other application/file through an add-in written for
powerpoint?
and is VBA the only choice for writing the add-ins??
any links/tutorials which explains add-ins to a beginner would be a
great help.
any idea/suggestions on this regards would be gratefully accepted.

You can create COM add-ins with PowerPoint 2000 onwards so you can use
Visual Studio/.Net for development. You can also create COM components and
make the calls from a PPA in PowerPoint 97 (PPA)

You can automate any application that supports it from an add-in.
