inline styles lead to lost characters

Hello -- I'm authoring in Word, then converting to HTML. Occasionally, I was seeing lost spaces in the HTML output -- for example, 'hello fred' in the source would be 'hellofred' in the output. If I select the para, and do a crtl+space which I believe removes inline styles then the problem goes away. Unfortunatley, this procedure also losts bolding etc so it's not a real solution.

Can anyone help identifyu what is getting inserted into the text to make these lost spaces different from regular spaces? Show formatting/marks doesn't indicate anything..
