Insert...Movies and Sounds...Record Sound is GRAYED OUT

I have Powerpoint 2000 on a Dell Inspiron 600 M.
I have tried re-installing the sofwtare, and also have
testing my sound card and I am able to record sounds with
other software and play back the sound as well.
However, within powerpoint, I am unable to record sounds
directly into a powerpoint slide.

What could be wrong?
