Insert Page Number

After working on a large multi-contributor document, Insert, Page Number
automatically inserts number as a footer. Drop down window no longer shows
just Bottom or Top but "Bottom of page (footer)" "Top of page (header)" How
do I get back to just Top and Bottom?

It is NOT inserted as a footer or even (really) in the footer, but rather in
a frame anchored to the footer.

The change in wording is just to make it clearer that page numbers at the
top of the page are in the header area and those at the bottom in the footer
area. If you have nothing but a page number in this area and are sure you
will never want to change or delete it, then you may be satisfied with
Insert | Page Numbers.

But if the header or footer needs to contain other text, use the Insert Page
Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar instead (View | Header and
Footer to open the header pane). See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UnaccountablyIndented.htm for
discussion of one of the possible repercussions of using Insert | Page
Numbers.

I guess I was under the impression that a simple page number was different
than using a footer to format and page number. I thought the drop-down
window used to read just Bottom and Top without the (footer) and (header).
Thanks for your input.

A "simple page number" (if by that you mean one inserted via Insert | Page
Numbers) is different in that it is inserted in a frame rather than directly
in the header or footer--which makes it a liability.
