insert symbol gone

My cursor turned into a giant minus sign, and when I went to the insert menu to choose symbol it went away. Now the option to insert a symbol on the insert menu is completely gone. How can I get it back?

Right click an unused area of the menu bar and select
customize. Select the commands tab. In the Categories
window select Insert. In the commands window scroll until
you find the Symbol command. Drag and drop on your insert
menu.

You accidently activated the terminator hyphen with
CTRL+ALT+Hyphen key. This thick black hyphen terminates
menu commands. Press ESC to kill it.

You inadvertently invoked what has been dubbed the "terminator hyphen" by
pressing Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen. Whenever you press this key combination, the next
menu item you click on is deleted (this *does* have a use, e.g., to remove
files from the Work menu or MRU list). If you ever get this mouse pointer
again unintentionally, press ESC to dismiss it. To restore your missing menu
command, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/RestoreMenuCmd.htm
