insert symbol

I just loaded microsoft office professional edition 2003 on my computer and i DO NOT have an option for inserting symbols or characters....symbol is no where to be found under the insert menu. How do I get this option available for me to use??? please help

Assuming you don't have adaptive menus enabled (that is, you have "Always
show full menus" checked on the Options tab of Tools | Customize), see
