inserted file displays instead of as an icon

i am attempting to insert a file (as an icon) for
reference but word displays the actual file. my actual
scenario is i have meeting notes typed up. i've
previously been able to insert a relevant excel file for
reference which can be clicked at the reader's
discretion. however, today, when i insert the excel file
the actual excel sheet displays.

help!

Use INSERT/OBJECT to insert a file as an icon.
