inserting a trademark symbol automatically

I have set up a word in the Word doctionary so that whenever I type
"trademark" it will be corrected to "trademark (r)." The (r) does not
translate to a circled "R" when I use this method. How do I get this to
happen?

Rather than setting it up in the dictionary, you'll want to set it up in the
AutoCorrect tool. Under tools go to AutoCorrect. Set it up as a "Replace
text as you type" item.
