Same as in most other apps. On a QWERTY US keyboard it's alt-3

Very many thanks indeed! I didn't need to use alt in my previous application - it was shift 3, which in Entourage gives a # sign.

Anyway - what a beautifully simple solution. Thanks again.

Shift-3 has always been # for me.
You know you can use the Keyboard Viewwer to visualize what shortcut is
needed to type specific charaacters.
System Preferences > International > Input
Make sure you check the box to see the menu item in the menus and select
the keyboard viewer in the list.
You can then use the menu item and found out many many other similar
shortcuts.

Thanks again. It transpires that my computer was set to a US keyboard. When I re-set it to British, the shift3 gave the £ sign as before. With the British keyboard alt 3 = #.
I live and learn!
