inserting multiple mpegs into powerpoint

I am inserting 2 mpeg files into a slide in my presentation. For some reason
when I go into the presentation mode, one of the images overlaps the other
image and start playing in that window. So both images are playing over each
other at the same time. Whats causing this? Also, My regular desktop computer
will run both of these images fine when the slide comes up, but if I run this
on my other laptop, I have the overlap problem or the images just disappear
from the screen. Codec problems? If so, how do I know which codec to go
after. And for my final question, is there any free software out there that I
can use to edit small mpeg files(i.e. say to slow the image movement down a
bit(slow motion) I have some snips that are only 1-2 seconds long and I
wounld like to extend them out a little bit.
Thanks

The start of movies is considered by PowerPoint to be an animation event, so
it is possible that you have both of the movies set to play at the same time
(probably as soon as the slide loads). You may want to edit the animation
movie start cues (from the animation pane) to set one to follow the other,
rather than having them start together. This is just a guess, of course.

As for movie files and their Codec's; and all their related headaches,
heartaches, disappointments, and troubles; I have but one suggestion. Look
at the PFC add-in. It is not free, but very reasonably priced for the
anxiety it relieves. It converts your movie files into something that most
every PowerPoint installation can run without having to install anything on
the destination computer(s). If has a free download and trial.

Free movie editing software is a bit trickier. There is Windows Movie Maker
2, which is available for free from Microsoft. It will allow for some time
alterations (half speed or double). Check if your system meets the minimum
requirements.

There are also many inexpensive movie editing softwares available that allow
for more precise control of video playback speed, but I would be hesitant to
recommend one over another. One can usually be found for under $25 at the
local geek store.
