Inserting wordart

When I try to insert Word art into a new or previous document, nothing
appears and Word freezes and becomes unusable. I know how to insert using
word art but now the entire program freezes, "not responding" and the whole
computer slows to a crawl until I "Ctrl + Alt + Del" everything. I use XP
and have plenty of memory (512). Ive used this Word on my older computer
without problems. Any ideas?

Try this,
Slide the acceleration down on your adapter, control panel, display folder, settings
tab, advanced button, troubleshoot tab.
If this solves the issue, go to the manufacturer's web site of your graphics card and
look around for an updated driver.

Mary,
That did help a little. I'm concerned why I have to do this on a new
computer(2 months old) Also at times the word art selected disapears with
only an empty box bordered area with handles appearing. In my Tools -
Options window my "Placeholders" are disabled and "Drawings" are enabled.
Any further help would be appreciated. Do I really need an updated driver
already? The windows update did not indicate an update was available.

Who knows how long ago the drivers were installed on your new computer? If sliding
down the acceleration helped then an update driver will help. Do not go to Microsoft
for upgraded drivers, go directly to the manufacturer's web site or the manufacturer
of your computer.

Thanks Mary. I updated the Intel Driver. This seems to have solved my
problem.
