Installing an Office 2004 for Mac upgrade

I downloaded, and tried to install an Office 2004 upgrade called
"creative.sit". When I double-click, it doesn't open. Instead, an
Apple message pops up saying "There is no default application specified
to open the document "creative.sit". This window gives me the choice
of "Choosing an application".

What am I supposed to do? I am very new to Macs (1 week) having used
windows since its inception.

I'm finding that Macs are not always so cut and dry simple, especially
when running third party (Microsoft) software.

I'd love to hear some opinions about Office 2004 for Mac having been a
long-time user of Office for Windows.

There IS a difference, I'm just not sure whether good or bad.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not familiar with any Office 2004 upgrade with that name. Where did
you download it from?

..sit indicates the file is a Stuffit Archive (much like .zip in
Windows). If you don't have Stuffit Expander on your machine, you can
download it free here:

You'll need to associate the .sit files with the correct app. With
Stuffit Expander installed, ctrl-click the file, choose Get Info from
the pop-up. In the Open With pane, choose Stuffit Expander and click
"Change All".

So far, you haven't mentioned anything that MS makes, AFAIK.

Anything specific in mind? Or opinions about anything?

Perhaps neither. Office for Mac and Office for Windows have somewhat
different feature sets, with both having platform-specific features.

That sounds bad - what makes you think this is really an Office 2004
upgrade? I've never heard of something called "creative".

No problem. My guess is that you're on a brand new machine running Tiger
(Mac OS X 10.4). It doesn't come with the software needed to open a
"sit" file, which is called Stuffit Expander. To get it, go here:

nder.html>

You have to jump thru a bunch of hoops, but eventually you'll find
you're on a page where you can specify OS X 10.3 (version 9.0.2 of
StuffIt) and push a download button. Once you've got it installed,
restart the computer and you'll be able to open .sit files. m.

Just to confirm other messages posted here - there is no MS upgrade called
'creative.sit'.

All official office updates are distributed through the MS Mactopia web site
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/>.

Be very careful before you open that file!
