Installing Office 2000 Professional

I have just purchased a new computer.
I have tried to load the Office 2000 Professional to the
new machine, using the correct key codes.
Disc 1 loaded with difficulty (stopped part way through).
Disc 2 loaded OK.
Each time I try to use any of the Office applications, I
got error messages.
I have tried to uninstall, but the machine will not allow
me to uninstall disc 1.
I cannot even install a friend's disc (just to see if it
is a fault with my current disc), because the machine
will not let me install a different disc until the first
is uninstalled!
Catch 22!
