'internal error in the automatic phone dialer...'. diagnose?

trying to phonefrom contavt list. phone and line connections plugged in ok.
modem prob ok. .AT#CLS=? shows command not supported - don't know if relevent.
can i make a call in a simpler way? old telephone? waht to do? get message a
tstart call box and check line properties box.
