Invoice Template, Incrementing Number

Can anyone help me figure out how to have an invoice
number increment each time a template is used? I checked
the knowledge base and there is a Visual Basic macro that
is supposed to do this but I don't understand some of the
instructions (form field, form protection) and cannot
find help on those terms.
