IRR calculation Limitations

Greetings,
In using the standard IRR formula, is there a limitation to the number
of periods that can be included?

If so, two additional questions:

1) what is the maximum number of periods, and

2) how does Excel calculate IRR incorrectly if the number of periods
exceeds the maximum?
