While typing in a word doc my laptop just randomly turned off. No
notification. No proper shutdown. (No, it didnt go to sleep. It
just turned off.

I had entourage running on the background.

When i restarted and looked at the console, this is what i saw:

Entourage has no ability to shutdown your computer. This would only be
possible with a script that you had written and enabled through
Entourage's Schedule feature. I doubt you've done that.

Because you see the words "shutting down" in whatever log you've pulled
this from, that doesn't necessarily mean it's referring to your computer
shutting down. Applications and services running on your Mac can be
"shut down" as well.

If your Mac laptop turned off and didn't allow you time to save files or
properly quit applications then that's a sign of hardware failure. Even
if your battery had completely run down your laptop would have gone into
sleep mode for a little while.

Locate the Mac OS X installer disk that came with your laptop and run
the hardware test that comes with it. You'll want to boot with the disk
in your optical drive and hold the Option key. This will allow you to
select the hardware test. Be sure to allow it to run a full diagnostic a
few times.

Hope this helps!

I really really don't see how Entourage (or the Office reminder) could
turn your computer off...

That's a sign of a malfunctioning battery.

Rest assured it has nothing to do withEntourage.

Just had this experience on my mac book pro. Its a bad battery. If
your battery shows less than 300 cycles, call Apple and they'll bive
you a new one.
