Is it possible to do a "virtual"/simplified shared worksheet?

Is it possible to password protect various cell ranges on a single worksheet
without having to resort to giving permission to specific users on a network?
The worksheet is located on a shared drive and the intend is for the users
to access the worksheet and edit only cells relevant to their role.

Is it a flat structure?

only architects can edit architecture data
AND
architects can only edit architecture data

If the above is true, you could place all the architecture data on one
password-protected worksheet and give the password to all architects,
trusting them not to divulge it and to reapply the same password when
they are done.

Or is it a hierarchy?

clerks can only edit clerical data,
managers edit managerial and clerical data,
etc

Then the password situation gets bit more complicated.

You could leave off the protection and get the management to tell the
clerks that they will be fired if the edit the managerial data. Then,
secretly get the workbook to log all changes against the users network
ID so you have an audit trail...
