Is it possible to link or attach a word document to a contact

I don't think you can do that and I don't think that the vCard format
would accept it, but you can create a project in Entoruage for that
contact and attach anything you want.

I did what you suggested but its a bit long winded for my purposes

Not sure if this was a feature in Entourage 2004 but while you can't
embed a file with your Contacts you can use Entourage 2008's Link To
Existing File feature to give you similar functionality.
