Is "Live Sync" = IDLE !?

1) Am I correct that what Entourage from Microsoft Office 2004 calls
"Live Sync" is what the rest of the world calls IDLE?

a) If so, why can't they just use the same term as everyone else?!?!

b) If not, how do I enable IDLE?

2) How do I test my server for IDLE support? (AH, I answered that last
one on my own... I did

"telnet mail.MyISPHere.com 143"

and it replied back:

* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS CHILDREN NAMESPACE
THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=REFERENCES SORT QUOTA IDLE ACL ACL2=UNION
STARTTLS] Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2004 Double Precision,

Yes.

They do, if you want to get techie: right-click (control-click) on the IMAP
server icon in the Folder List. Select "Get Info". if the dialog window
contains "IDLE" then that shows that your IMAP server _supports_ IDLE. To
choose to _enable it for Entourage_, you choose to check LiveSync in
Tools/Accounts/that account/Options.

The reason why they call it LiveSync is probably that this way they can make
it clear that it your choice whether to enable it or not. (For example, you
would _not_ want to enable it if you plugged your PowerBook into a dialup PP
service while traveling. You can re-enable it when you get back to your
DSL/cable/T1 connection at home or work.) You can't actually turn IDLE on or
off for your server - it either has the capability or it doesn't. So by not
calling :LiveSync "IDLE" they're not giving the false impression that you
can control the server itself.
b) If not, how do I enable IDLE?
N/A.

That's one way. Just right-clicking on the server icon and Get Info will get
you the same info.

I think that was TjL's point. There's nothing in the UI to make you think
"Live Sync - aha, that lets Entourage use IDLE". Even the help's coy about
what it actually does.

My understanding of IDLE is that a client can only use IDLE to monitor
changes in one folder. However it looks like Live Sync works with multiple
folders if you don't have "Only connect to Inbox" checked, so does it do
something else?

Cheers,

Chris

Paul - Thanks for the info re "Get Info"

It appears Entourage and Thunderbird are the only 2 mail applications
on OS X which support IDLE.

And Thunderbird is, to me, terrible.

But yeah I think calling it "Live Sync (IMAP IDLE)" in the preferences
UI would be better.

Or even in the Help Files if someone searches for PUSH or IDLE... there
they could explain the difference.
