Is there an alternate way to compact DB???

My database in Entourage X is 3.97 gigs. I have deleted thousands of
emails with large attachments and it made no difference to the size.
I can't get Entourage to do a rebuild. It just hangs and nobody can
tell me what to do to get it to stop hanging. So is there an
alternate way to shrink the database since Entourage refuses to do a
rebuild?

Thank you.

Unfortunately no.
Do you have the latest version of Entourage X?? There is a slight chance
that an update might improve the process of rebuilding of the database,

Entourage X has two rebuild options. The Advanced rebuild will make your
database smaller, but you have to be able to run rebuild. Have you tried
moving your database to a larger drive to see if that will rebuild?

See this blog article on rebuilding an Entourage X database that was too
large.

You might have to accept that your database is kaput. Unless you have a
backup then you'll have to start over.

i have 16 gigs of free hd space. that should be enough room for a
rebuild, shouldn't it?

Barely. You can't use every bit of your drive and the OS still work.
