Is there any way to save to disk the powerpoint handouts?

Not in PowerPoint. "Handout" has to be chosen before printing. But you could
save them as a PDF or XPS file, if you have PowerPoint 2007 or a third-party
product to convert your presentation.

In addition to Ute's ideas you could use file -> send to -> word.
