When developing and running a presentation in Powerpoint 2003, the slide
items are automatically advancing after a few seconds even though the items
are set to advance only when the mouse has been clicked. How do I stop this?

This does not happen in presentations I developed in Powerpoint 2000 and run
in Powerpoint 2003.

I am using a DELL Latitude D505, and using the internal keyboard, touchpad,
and buttons (i.e. no external mouse or keyboard).

Have you checked if there is a transition timing applied. Activate the
transition task pane, look if there is a timing set next to automatic. If so
remove the checkmark. Click on apply to all.
In the slide sorter view you will easily see what timing has been applied,
if any.

Do you have the slide transition set to advance automatically? If so, remove
the check from the Advance automatically afer X seconds box.
