It's gotten out of hand

I've got some 2000 emails piles up in my in box. Is there any way to save
the whole thing off to a CD so I can go through them for archived info as
necessary but pretty much empty the box? Please don't tell me I have to
save them one at a time! I could never find the time to do that.

Yup, there's a simple way; select everything in your inbox, then drag
it to the desktop. This will create an email archive file which should
be usable with any email program.

I see that someone has explained about moving the messages to the desktop as
an MBOX file. I would like to add that I would just drag the folder and not
select all individual messages. Your desktop will be some kind of mess with
2000 messages.

Do you use Rules? This would really help to keep your incoming mail
organized. The Rules pages will help you get started and gives some common
examples.
