Junk filter not working at all

A

Alexander Moritz

Hi there!

I just got Entourage and started to use it with all my email accounts
(Exchange as well as around 10 POPs).

Unfortunately, the filter doesn't work. I am getting like hundreds of mails
and even setting the junk mail filter to high doesn't change anything. I had
a look in the folder, Entourage hasn't filtered out even one email (while my
old program would have filtered out around 100)...

Looks like the junk mail filter isn't working at all...as it would be
deactivated.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

There have been occasional reports of such things happening.

You could try creating a new user account in OS X, start entourage from
there and see if it captures any junk. That would indicate whether the
problem was in the application files or your user files.

I had the same problem, and finally found that the problem was that I
had unintentionally created a "Mailing List Manager" rule that
specified MY email address rather than the sender's email address. I
believe that happened because at some time in the past I selected an
email message from that sender when the message was marked as junk, and
I selected "This is not junk e-mail", and then, when prompted, selected
"Create a mailing list rule". I believe that Entourage then entered my
address instead of the sender's address in the mailing list rule. That
resulted in all email being treated as "non-junk".

Good Luck,
Ken

That could well make sense. I have had the same problems and after reading
your message I looked in my mailing list rules (which I have never used) and
found an untitled rule which had my address in it. Since I have no idea how
mailing list rules work, or indeed what they are for, I have deactivated it.
I certainly never intentionally created the rule!

I have also found that the filter works quite well on my IMAP accounts (even
if I am simply using an IMAP edition of one of my pop accounts)

Let's see what happens now.

Thank for the tip.

I believe it you learned more about rules you would find that they really
enhance your email experience. If all your mail is going to your Inbox, it
can soon become unmanageable. Creating rules with the MLM, Rules and Junk
Mail filters allows you to organize your mail into folders.

There are three types of rules used in Entourage to manage your mail. The
Mailing List Manager (MLM) and Junk Mail Filter (JMF) are names for
specialized rules. Rules are custom rules that you create.

* Mailing List Manager (MLM) is a user friendly approach to Rules which
allows you to set specialized actions for incoming list messages (like the
Entourage Talk list)
* The Junk Mail Filter is a specialized rule to help manage your unwanted
mail.
* Rules allows you to specify the criteria for custom sorting of your mail.

To get started using Rules see:

Hope this helps.
