Junk Mail filter doesn't seem to work

E

Eric A. Silver

I have just purchased Office: Mac, which includes Entourage. The junk
filter doesn't appear to work. All the settings have been made in
accordance with instructions, but nothing happens. In order to move
anything to the junk folder, I have to physically drag it there. I
have the junk filter set all the way to the right, Enable junk filter
is checked, and If e-mail is junk, then move to junk folder is marked.
Nothing happens. Additionally, there is no way to delete messages
from the junk folder, save to highlight them and click delete. Am I
doing something wrong, or is the program not functioning?
thanks for your response.

Sorry. That should be

If
Is Junk mail

Then
Move message to Junk folder

The filter only filters. You have to do the moving. (This is due to a court
case several years back.)

thanks, Paul. in reading your response, it would appear possible that
you didn't read my original posting, or that I didn't make myself
clear. I said: I have the Junk filter enabled, and the setting is:
if: "is junk", then: "move to junk folder"

your advice to me was:
If
Is Junk mail

Then
Move message to Junk folder

Is there a difference between what I said and what you said? If so,
please point it out to me. I believe that's where I have it set.
Your advice appears to be precisely what I said I was already doing.
My settings are already there. My problem is that nothing is
happening. The junk mail continues to sit there in my in box and
nothing goes into the junk folder. Reading your response gives me the
impression that you mioght not have read or understood what I
originally sent. Or, alternatively, that I didn't understand what you
wrote, but it does look remarkably like what my question originally
was.

Again, second problem: there appears to be no button to push or single
control that will empty my junk mail folder. I use Office 2003 at
work, and there, a simple right click on the junk folder will bring up
several options, one of which is "empty junk mail folder." That
doesn't appear to be the case with Entourage. It seems that the only
way i can get mail into the junk mail folder is to physically drag
it--one by one-- from the in-box to the junk folder, then go to the
junk folder and one by one delete the messages in there. I'm not
certain that this is how the program is supposed to work, nor am I
certain that the technique of moving messages one by one is of any use
to anyone, for if that were indeed the case, then of what value would
the junk filter be? so I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

You also said it would be helpful if I indicated which version of
Entourage I'm using. I indicated that I just purchased Entourage, and
it's version 10.1.4, so it was up to date as of a few days ago,
although I admit I haven't performed an update in the past 72 hours.
If I update, will this cause the junk filter to work?

thanks for any help you can offer,
Eric A. Silver

Yes, there is. You said <<I have the Junk filter enabled, and the setting
is:
if: "is junk", then: "move to junk folder"
There is no such setting in the JMF. You need to make your own RULE to so
this. Perhaps that's what you've done, but you didn't say so. I was
concerned that you do this in the right place.

OK. If you have both POP and IMAP accounts, you have to make such a rule for
both Tools/Rules/Mail (POP) and Tools/Rules/Mail (IMAP). Otherwise make sure
you make the rule in the correct POP or IMAP panel that applies to your
account(s). (If you have more than one IMAP account and have made Junk mail
folders on both servers. it gets trickier.)

Then you must make sure that this rule runs before any other rule, That's
probably where you're going wrong. In the POP or IMAP Rules panel, select
the rule and drag it to the top of the panel. Now it will work.
If so,
please point it out to me. I believe that's where I have it set.

No. You do not have to drag the messages one by one. If you find any
messages that have not been moved by your newly-positioned rule, you can do
a few things. If it's just a question of catching the messages that have so
far escaped the rule because of the rule didn;t run before, you can click
command-A ro select all, and go to Message/Apply Rule/that rule, and all the
messages which meet the criteria will now get moved.

If there are other messages which don;t meet the rule's criteria but you
still would like to make junk, you can use the standard Mac command-click to
select all the pertinent messages in the list, then do just one drag. Or
click the Move button and choose the Junk folder.
You also said it would be helpful if I indicated which version of

No, you're up to date. But when the next bib version Office 2004 comes out
within a coupelk of months or so, you should check up on the Junk filter.
There have been announcements that it will be improved - perhaps you'll find
some features you'll like.
