Hello,

We have a problem with Junk E-mail Protection.

Fore some unknown reason it doesn't work anymore (it's set on High) and
every mail stays in the inbox (except those with rules of course).

Is this problem known ? The database has been rebuilt but it's the same.

(French 11.3.4 and OS X 10.4.8)

Thanks for your attention.

I am having the opposite reaction. I have the filter set on low and
everything is going into junk, incluing email from people in my
address book

Check for a rule that is causing this behavior. There are 3 kinds of rules:

Mailing List Manager
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules YOU create)

These 3 rules run in the order they are listed. The custom rules also run in
the order they are listed.

It is most likely a Mailing List Manager entry that has accidentally been
created that is causing the problem.

These entries are all to easy to make by mistake when marking an item as
'Not Junk' because of some ambiguous wording in that dialog.

Check that there are no entries that shouldn't be there in the "Mailing List
Manager" under the 'Tools' menu.

Check your Rules to see if the popup destination folder has been changed to
either inbox or junk.

OK, it has been fixed, let's see how.
Two Macs were affected.
There was no problem related with MLM or Rules bad destination.

We first tried permissions repair and usual os x maintenance => no result.
Checked Entourage settings and rebuild database => no result.
Trashed all Entourage preferences files => no result.

Trashed the Rules file => FIXED!

On one Mac we tried all the hints before running Entourage. As the problem
seemed fixed, on the other Mac I had it step by step. It was fixed only
after the last step, trashing Rules, so can we think here is the problem.

On both Macs the problem appeared quite short after modifying/creating
rules, which seems to confirm the upper statement.

Thanks for your help.

In another message: "One more lost database - after rebuild" you explained:
The configuration is a bit unusual. I have an external hard disk that
contents a crypted image disk (for confidentiality).
I use it to "synchronize" my 3 Macs (3 different locations, no server) and
even to use it on other Macs. It's not usual but VERY easy at use. All the
original stuff is on that external disk and then always up to date and
avalaible.
(Backups are made on the 3 Macs and on another external support.)

So the Entourage identity folder is located too on the image disk and each
Mac has an alias of that folder in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X
Identities/
That works pretty good.

Your questions indicated this was a problem on two macs but you never
mentioned they were using the same Identity via an alias. It's very
important to mention non-standard behavior like this. This bit of info could
have resulted in better troubleshooting.

Does more than one Entourage read this data at the same time?

Sorry for the confusion, I posted 2 messages because the problems are not
linked.
The 2 Macs in the message 'Junk email' are not the same than those in the
message 'One more lost database'.
These 2 have different users, each one with it's own identity and standard
behavior.
The same problem raised on these Macs quite at the same time, and the fact
is that both had modified/added a bunch of rules the day before. And on both
Macs the problem was fixed by trashing the Rules file, probably the only
file corrupted as shown in the step by step repairing process.
Does more than one Entourage read this data at the same time?
(This applies to my 3 own Macs)
Of course not.
I specified that my Macs are in 3 different places and that I use my
external hard disk (light 2.5"/7200 self-powered 100 Go) as a "shuttle"
between them.
All my 'original' stuff is on the HD and on the different Macs I have
aliases for Entourage, Address Book, Safari, etc. Another way tu sync.
