just bought a mac how do I convert outlook express mail

Gary

I just bought a power book (it hasn't arrived yet) but
after reading all sorts of documentation I can't figure
out how to convert my outlook express 6 .dbx files. I
have 10s of thousands of emails totalling about 700 mbs
in 20 or 30 .dbx files. From what I've read to convert
the files I need outlook express on the computer, but
there is no outlook express for os X. Any insight
appreciated.

Do you mean Outlook Express 5? There never was an Outlook Express 6 for the
Mac, and it certainly never used .dbx files.

no, I'm presnently using an xp pc and I need to move my
outlook express 6 mail files to my new powerbook so I'm
able to access them on entourage, mac mail or some other
acceptable email app.

wow, that sounds like a chore. that guy had 1400 emails.
my total is in the 10s of thousands. how about importing
oe 6 into mozilla and then importing the mozilla file
into mac mail or entourage?

I don't know if that would work or not. Sounds like it should. Import it
into Netscape or Mozilla for Windows, then export that into it's Mac
counterpart of Netscape or Mozilla, then import into whatever client you
like.

Too bad all those messages aren't hanging out on an IMAP server huh? Then
you wouldn't have an issue!

Good luck.

I can't believe no one has yet mentioned the EXCELLENT AppleScript
application by Paul Berkowitz, "Export-Import Entourage". This will allow
importing from Windows' Outlook Express, as well as a dozen or so other mail
applications. It will bring over messages, contacts, and so on. $20
shareware on VersionTracker.com:

Good to know Allen. Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize Paul had a script
for that or I would have suggested it ;-)

Actually, the scripts bring over other things, but not messages. (There's
one script that can help a bit but it's not needed.) However you can
download the package for free, and in the ReadMe there are instructions on
how to bring over messages from Outlook Express Windows using Eudora Windows
as an intermediary for making MBOXes which can be dragged into Entourage. I
believe there's a similar way using Netscape (Entourage's importer doesn't
import from Netscape 7 for OS X, only from Netscape 4 for Classic). But it's
a little easier using Eudora Windows.

My problem is: I use Entourage 2001 on a PB. Now I have bought another
PB and I need my messages, contacts, etc. trasferred to the new machine. (no
need for permanent syncing though, as I will be using otne the new PB).
Entourage's import option doesn't work for me or I don't know how to get it
to work. I first tried to import using Appletalk. I then copied my old
Microsoft user data (Spanish OS) to the new computer, but it doesn't work.

This should not be a problem, but I can`t figure how to do it

Thank you

Is the new computer also using Entourage 2001, or are you now using
Entourage X? Or are you now wanting to use Entourage 2001 in Classic in OS
X, whereas before you were in OS 9?

If you are now in Jaguar (OS 10.2) or Panther (OS 10.3) then the Microsoft
User Data folder Entourage (2001 and X and 2004) uses is now in the
Documents folder on your OS X user folder, not the Documents folder on your
hard disk root. Move or copy the Office 2001 Identities folder to the MUD in
the user Documents folder. Now you'll either open up back in your familiar
identity, or you am switch to it in File/Switch Identities...
You should be able to to just access it without importing. (On the other
hand if you're now in Entourage X you can import.)

If you're still in OS 9 on the new computer (why?) then the correct location
is the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder on the hard disk.
Just move your entire old MUD folder there, replacing, or the Office 2001
Identities folder inside the MUD.

Thank you Paul. Will the same process work with Mozilla?
I've already started with that.

Thank you. I am in Panther (and was in Jaguar) and was able to do it
correctly.
