Just installed Office and can't start Entourage

David

After having being forced onto a windows machine 10 years ago, I
finally have been able to switch back to Macintosh and purchased a
PowerBook Pro

I have a couple of questions relating to Entourage:

1. I installed Office, and Word, PowerPoint, and Exel all start
properly. When I try to start Entourage, I get an error message:
"This Identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage"

2. Is Entourage any good? Is it superior to the standard Mac
applications (Mail, iCal, Address book, etc.)

Thanks for you help!

Some additional information...this is a brand new, out-of-the box
MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.4.8. I installed Entourage as part of
Office:mac 2004

Welcome to a better world! ;-)
I have a couple of questions relating to Entourage:

1. I installed Office, and Word, PowerPoint, and Exel all start
properly. When I try to start Entourage, I get an error message:
"This Identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage"

The identity which Entourage is trying to access, i.e. the one in
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office Identities, was modified by a newer
version of Entourage than the one you are currently using. Install the
latest Office 2004 update (Update 11.3), which you can get either by
downloading it from Mactopia <http://www.microsoft.com/mac> or by having
the Microsoft AutoUpdate application perform the update automatically.
Entourage should open just fine after that.
2. Is Entourage any good? Is it superior to the standard Mac
applications (Mail, iCal, Address book, etc.)

It certainly is a very good application, but you'll have to find out for
yourself whether it's superior to the iApps or not. I think it's a question
that comes up quite frequently on discussion boards, so you might just want
to google "Entourage vs Mail", "Entourage vs iCal", or something along these
lines. Entourage and the iApps have each their strengths and their
weaknesses, so why not try both for some time and see which one suits you
best?
Thanks for you help!

If you're wondering how this might have happened, the Test Drive that came
on your computer, which you used first, must have been a more recent update
version than the retail one you installed out of the box and haven't yet
updated. They use the same data, you'll be happy to know.

In addition to updating your retail version as Michel says, you must also do
a proper removal of the Test Drive, if you have not done so yet. That
doesn't mean just putting I in the Trash - there are other files installed
that will conflict. Go to the Remove Office utility in
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/ folder, and run it, to
remove the Test Drive. Then Empty the Trash. This process will not touch
your data (Entourage identity).
Yes; and yes in many aspects.
