Keep getting prompted for password

J

Jeff

Hi,

I am using a hosted exchange service and have Entourage 11.3.3 running
against it. After a little stumbling around to get it configured, I
was finally able to get it connected. Everything seemed to be going
along swimmingly and Entourage began to synch against the exchange
server. When it was complete, however, I was prompted again to enter
my domain, account ID and password. Upon entering the correct
password, I received an error dialog "Login failure: unknown user name
or password".

I repeat the process a few times, and, in frustration switch over to
Safari and check via OWA. That goes well, and not here is the strange
part, when I returned to muck around with Entourage and responded to
the enter my domain, account ID and password prompt, it worked.
From that point on, the only way I have been able to retrieve mail
using Entourage is by first launching OWA, then Entourage, then
responding the the enter my domain, account ID and password prompt. Of
course, the session for OWA expires every so often, and Entourage
begins to throw-up again. I am forced to refresh OWA and reenter my
password in Entourage.

I have experienced this on every (4-5) differet network connection to
date, so it is not localized to

This is getting old fast, however. Anyone have a suggestion? I have
scoured the other discussion items and cannot find a resolution.

Install tcpflow and monitor the traffic when Entourage starts balking. Maybe
it will give you a clue as to what is going wrong.

See directions here:

Hi Jeff!

Can you try an experiment for me? Change your password to eight or more
characters and make it a combination of three of these things:

1. UPPER case letters
2. Lower case letters
3. Numbers
4. Symbol characters (Shift + 1 through 9)

Example: P@55w0rd

I suspect that just changing the password itself may be enough but I'm
interested if the complexity may make a difference with the server.

Hope this helps! bill

Hi William,

I did as you suggested, and it appears to have worked. The host does
not allow special characters, but a combo of the rest worked. Funny,
it is rare for me to have a pw without at least one cap (I always use
a mix of alpha and numeric). Anyway, thanks. You reply also led me to
your solution (script) for accessing the Global Address List - great
stuff.

Actually, I stand corrected. Did a restart, cranked open Entourage,
received the pw prompt, entered my password (the new one) and splat -
the same nagging error message. As soon as I opened Safari and logged
into OWA, Entourage would accept my password and connect.

Are you allowing your Mac to remember the password for you? You may have
a corrupt keychain.

Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access and run Keychain First Aid
from they Keychain Access menu. You might also try deleting any store
email passwords for this account if you see them.

If that doesn't work then have a look at this series of posts on the
MacWindows.com website
<http://www.macwindows.com/entourage.html#112304>. A couple of things I
found interesting are:

1. Removing events with repeated reminders.
2. Not entering the DOMAIN name but using "DOMAIN\userID" instead.
3. Looking for messages with strange characters such as Asian characters
and removing them via OWA.

Hope this helps! bill

I have researched this issue to death lucky for me the recent update
seems to have triggered it to happen more often and people to discuss
it more. I have found it is not the install of Entourage or the users
Mac that has the problem. I have one heavy user who has this issue on
any Mac they get on including mine which is running just fine in my
account. Her mail is fine on a PC. We have checked the server side and
her account is fine. It looks to be a bad message, calendar issue as I
have applied all other possible fixes with no improvement. So I will
post back tomorrow if that works after we clean up her massive account

I would be very glad to know your results. This topic is generating a
lot of talk but nothing definitive has been posted back yet.
