I need to follow the help information instructions, but as soon as I click
into the box that I need to do the work in, the help instructions disappear.

Hi Paula,

If you are using Project 2003 (I don't have any earlier versions to
check right now), you can use the Auto Tile button (upper left corner of
the help window) to automatically tile the Project window and the
Project help window.. That should change the size of the Project window
so you can read the help information and still work in Project without
having the Project window overlay the help window.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
