Keyboard Accelerator Keys (?)

According to the PPT Helpfile it should be possible to attach a keyboard
command like Alt+X to any toolbar button. I have followed the instructions
carefully via TOOLS>Customise>Modify Selection and everything seems to be
OK. But the accelerator is not displayed on Toolbar Tips and clicking the
desired key combination (Alt+[single key]) produces nothing but a dismal,
audio "clunk".
Interestingly it's the same with the Word application. (I have Wd. 2002 and
PPT 2002.)

This facility is rather essential in PPT because Microsoft didn't include
the free assignment of keyboard shortcuts in PPT that it did in Word. This
just leaves the mouse. I am beginning to learn what is meant by carpal
tunnel syndrome, and it's not funny.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

(Also, can anyone in the UK confirm that this Newsgroup has been "down" for
the last two weekends - or whether it's just my browser. I continually got
"Page Unavailable" during all that time, and on other Microsoft Newsgroup
Sites as well.)

You'll have to make sure to select "Image and Text" or "Text Only"
when the Modify Selection menu is up. If you don't display the
keyboard shortcut (I think you mean "shortcut," not "accelerator"?)
alongside the respective icons in the toolbar, the shortcut feature will not
work. This is a bit different from Word.
